We offer the following Yoga classes at Yoga House:

Ashtanga Yoga ~
a traditional Yoga system, as taught by Guru-ji Sri K Pattabhi Jois. This dynamic style of Yoga has the power to transform through a detoxifying internal heat, that purifies the body and the mind. At the root of Ashtanga Vinyasa (breath and movement system) is a strong focus on integrating the subtle energy of Ujjayi Pranayama (victorious breath), Bandha (energy valve / lock) and Drishti (looking point)

Deep Flow Yoga ~
a deep Vinyasa (flowing) Yoga journey with an emphasis on alignment, guided towards a more gentle Yin (restorative) ending, creatively sequenced to an eclectic mix of inspirational music.

Yoga Philosophy ~
a study of the more subtle and spiritual path of Yoga, with a focus on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali including the 8 Limbed Yoga Path and Samkya concepts of Purusa (soul / pure consciousness) and Prakriti (nature / matter), the Krisnamacharya Yoga lineage and the origins of Ashtanga Yoga, subtle aspects of the Ashtanga Yoga practice such as Vinyasa (breath and movement system), Ujjayi Pranayama (victorious breath), Bandha (energy valve / lock) and Drishti (looking point), Prana (lifeforce) and the Vayus (movements of lifeforce), the Nadis (energy channels) and Chakras (energy vortexes), the Koshas (layers of the body), Hindu mythology and Sanskrit chanting

Pranayama and Mantra ~
a candle lit evening class, inspired to guide our senses inward towards the gentle circulation and resonance of sacred lifeforce. Pranayama is the expansion and control of vital lifeforce, and involves various breathing techniques that assist in soothing our nervous system. Mantra is the use of sacred sound vibration, through chanting from ancient Sanskrit texts, to heighten our personal and collective energetic vibration.

once per Month we offer our students an opportunity to intimately deepen their exploration of a specific aspect of Yoga though a 3 hour long class. Kindly ask about the upcoming date and topic at our receptions desk.

Yoga Teacher

At the heart of our Yoga Shala is our experienced resident Yoga teacher, Melanie De Villiers. Mel is an inspirational Yogini with a powerful spirit, whom has returned to her soul home, the crystal island Koh Phangan, to share her inspirational Yoga knowledge, gathered over more than 10 years of dedicated Yoga practice and much experience in teaching at various Yoga studios in Cape Town. She teaches strong, traditional Ashtanga Yoga and also creative, restorative Deepflow Yoga classes.

In awakening to the importance of Yoga tradition, Mel has firmly rooted herself in the Krishnamacharya lineage of India. The substance of her Yoga practice and teaching style is based on the teachings of Sri K Pattabhi Jois and BKS Iyengar. Mel has had the absolute privilege to study with some incredible Yogic beings, including BKS Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar and Rolf & Marci Naujokat. With an open mind and heart, Mel has actively explored and investigated many diverse styles of Yoga, such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Iyengar, Synergy, Yin, Anusara, Sivananda and Kundalini Yoga.

Mel learnt the art of hands on adjustments from a very skilled Ashtanga Yoga teacher, Olivier David, whom she assisted for several months. In progressing deeper into the Vinyasa method of Yoga, Mel looks to Richard Freeman as the ultimate guide and assimilates much of his profound teachings into her classes. Currently Mel is working on integrating the Yoga Anatomy studies she completed with Yoga Synergy founder and Physiotherapist, Simon Borg Olivier. She is also further exploring the valuable Yoga Therapy studies she was introduced to at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune. Continually deepening her knowledge of the sacred art and science of Yoga, Mel has traveled extensively in India to explore its ancient roots.

In deep commitment to personal evolution, Mel firmly believes in the transformational and healing power of Yoga, as a strong spiritual medicine that can unlock our fullest potential. With a down to earth and approachable attitude, Mel is always open to assisting students with any concerns along their Yoga path.
